What Sets Judo Apart From the Rest?

The definition of self-defence martial arts, according to the Cambridge English Dictionary, is a sport or activity in which people compete against each other using dangerous physical force. So how is Judo different from the others then? Simply, Judo is mainly a grappling self-defence martial art, but strikes and throws can also be utilised in competition. In Judo, your goal is to either throw or take down an opponent, immobilise or subdue them with a pin, or force your opponent to submit using a joint lock or a choke.

Judo practitioners use different combinations of grips, leverage, balance, and momentum to achieve these goals. Judo is unique among self-defence martial arts because people of all ages and sizes can practise it and learn to protect themselves from much larger opponents.

Karate

Karate is a martial art based on ancient martial arts techniques, such as jujitsu. It uses striking and kicking movements to defend oneself. Karate practitioners dress in a white uniform called a gi, which consists of a jacket, pants, and belt. The coloured belts represent the practitioner's level of proficiency in the art, with a black belt being the most prestigious distinction.

Jiu-jitsu

Jiu-jitsu is a close combat form that uses leverage and momentum to subdue an opponent. You can use Jiu-jitsu for self-defence, competition, or to stay physically fit. The main difference you can find between Judo vs Jiu-jitsu is Judo's technique of using the opponent's weight to take them down, which uses the least amount of impact.

Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art characterised by its focus on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, and fast kicking movements. The name taekwondo comes from the Korean words tae (foot), Kwon (fist), and do (way). Taekwondo might be loosely translated as "the way of the foot and fist." Taekwondo has also proven to be an effective method of self-defence with its techniques used by police and military forces worldwide.

Judo

While there are many different martial arts to choose from, Judo is widely viewed as the best choice for self-defence. Because Judo focuses on using the opponent's momentum to throw them off balance, it is an incredibly effective form of self-defence, as even a much larger opponent can be taken down with relative ease. Judo is also a very versatile martial art, as we can use it for sport and self-defence. As a result, Judo in MMA is vastly becoming a known and practised strategy. In addition, Judo is incredibly accessible, as it doesn't require expensive equipment or special facilities. As a result, Judo is the perfect martial art for anyone looking to improve their self-defence skills.
